Gratefulness (Birthday Edition)

It amazes me that I started this blog over a year ago; sharing my experiences of pursuing and maintaining a healthier lifestyle.  I’ve had my setbacks but manage to make comebacks. As Donnie McClurkin would sing “We fall down but we get up.”

Today, I will continue to reflect on my journey while enjoying the day and praising God for allowing me to see another year.  Right now, it looks like we have some rain but I know that it’s a sunshine in my heart!  I’m determined to go and work out in the community fitness center today and this week, check into the Kazaxe’ class this week.

   

Since my birthday is officially on tomorrow (Aug 27), I began my celebration early.  I treated myself to not one but TWO concerts.  In addition, it was an opportunity to meet people who I interact with in social media (for almost a year) because we admire a particular artist and his music!  I had a great time and some of the people I met came from other states and another country to see him!  I was still able to eat healthy and walk during my lunch breaks before attending the concerts—most of the time LOL!!

 

If you told me that I would’ve moved out of my home state of Alabama in 2008 for graduate school and employment opportunities five, ten, or fifteen years ago, I probably would’ve thrown my hand up and say, “You’re talking out the side of your neck” LOL!! I’ve had so many experiences—good and not so good—-that have helped me shape my character and I continue to wear my shades and move forward in faith.  I’m confident that by this time next year, I’ll be in a better physical shape to continue my journey and truly work on the purpose God has for me in my life.  And for this journey, I am grateful.

I’m Not Out of Sight (Seven More Days Until My Birthday)

I had a post but my original writing got lost during the power outage.  So, I try again…………

 

It’s been almost 2 weeks since I’ve posted.  I still haven’t lost focus of my goals to pursue and maintain a healthier lifestyle.  In addition, I’m so excited of the fact that my birthday is only seven days away.  Since my birthday is on a Monday this year, I’ll begin my celebration early with a new hairstyle, two concerts, and later in the month, a short trip home during Labor Day Weekend. I haven’t seen my family since December 2011 so I am VERY excited about my trip!

With so many things going on personally and professionally, it’s becoming more evident to take care of ourselves.  I’ve heard the phrase “Health is wealth” several times.  I recently went in for my annual physical.  Overall, my test results were good, but my doctor noticed that my Vitamin D is low.  Off to the nearest OTC Pharmacy I go; 2000 units is what I have to take.

 

I pushed myself to go to the community fitness center.  It’s not a large location, but it has the equipment that I can work out on.  I managed to work out on the elliptical machine for 50 minutes and burning 443 calories.  Can’t you see the sweat? LOL!!  I was so hyped up after the workout, that I want to do it 2-3 times a week.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

One of my friends told me about another workout called Kazaxe (pronounced KAH-ZAH-SHAY) which is considered more intense than Zumba.  The class location isn’t too far from where I live so I’d like to try it out. I’ll keep you posted.

Speaking of Kazaxe, I will have a video for you to show what it looks like.  I’m not done yet! I still have ways to go but I’m enjoying the pursuit of fitness and look forward to celebrating my birthday on August 27th!

Countdown to Another Year of Life (22 Days Left)

By the time you read this blog post, I will be reflecting on the fact that only 22 days are left until my birthday.  People who know me see my countdowns (especially when it comes to work LOL). I set some weight loss goals for myself on August 5, 2011 and would hope to accomplish more by the time my birthday arrives:

FITNESS GOALS

August 5, 2011

  1. LOSE 15 POUNDS BY SEPTEMBER OR OCTOBER 2011
  2. DRINK 98OZ. OF WATER
  3. EXERCISE 6 DAYS A WEEK
  4. NO DRIVE THRU RESTAURANT VISITS
  5. MAKE HEALTHIER CHOICES FOR FOOD
  6. WRITE WEEKLY BLOG AND POST IT EACH SUNDAY
  7. RECORD SPARKPEOPLE.COM NUTRITION & FITNESS
  8. KEEP CONTINUOUS PRAYER

 

I did manage to accomplish some of them, but of course, I’m human and a work in progress.  So far, I did lose 18 pounds (but gained 5 of them recently…UGH!!) and am able to wear slacks and jeans that were sitting in the closet for over a year. I’m very proud of those accomplishments! When you try to do better in all aspects of your life, don’t be surprised of the opposition that may come your way.

   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Stress is definitely an effective “Debbie Downer.” I try not to worry about situations that I can’t change so I pray to God for guidance, keep moving in faith, and hope for the best.  I also know that I have to incorporate more fruits and vegetables in my eating habits and stay away from too many carbohydrates.  This was evident when I tried to donate blood last month and my iron levels were low.  There’s still my ‘project’ of checking out the fitness center in my resident community so I can do workouts after work without losing sleep at night (I was working out with my roommate after 10pm).

I did manage to do Zumba and walk about 3 miles this week.  I REFUSE to give up so I continue to keep moving!

In the next couple of posts, you’ll see me count down in each title.  I’m looking forward to celebrating another year of life and hopefully visit family at home in the process!
